Passed in 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) aims to help the U.S. reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the country by 40%, with the goal of dropping emission levels to 2005 levels before 2030. Part of this program involves incentives and rebates that make it easier for homeowners to invest in high-efficiency home upgrades, such as heat pump installations, to conserve energy while electrifying their home comfort systems.

In this article, we’ll break down how Florida residents can benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act, including:

  • The High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA)
  • The Homeowner Managing Energy Savings Program (HOMES)
  • The 25C Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credit
  • Weatherization Assistance Program

High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA)

A key way that Florida homeowners can take advantage of the Inflation Reduction Act is through HEERHA, or the “High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act.” This rebate program covers the cost of electrification projects such as:

  • Heat pump installations
  • Heat pump water heater installations
  • Upgrading circuit panels
  • Insulation and air sealing
  • Proper ventilation

For low-income households, the rebate covers 100% of the cost (both purchase and installation), up to $14,000 max. Moderate-income households qualify for 50% of the cost, again up to $14,000 max.

Homeowner Managing Energy Savings Program (HOMES)

Another way that Florida homeowners can save with the Inflation Reduction Act is through HOMES, or “Homeowners Managing Energy Savings Program.” This program offers a rebate of up to $8,000 off the cost of heat pump installation.

It’s important to note that this rebate program comes with a caveat: your contractor must prove that the new system can save you a minimum of 20% off your electricity bill. However, heat pumps are incredibly efficient, so this shouldn’t be an issue.

25C Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credit

Under the IRA’s 25C Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credit, Florida homeowners can deduct up to 30% of a qualified heat pump installation, with a max of $2,000. This program does not have any income restrictions and can be stacked with other rebates.

Additionally, the 25C tax credit offers up to $1,200 off the cost of duct sealing, insulation, and exterior windows and doors, with the goal of weatherizing and sealing your home for maximum energy efficiency.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Under the IRA’s “Weatherization Assistance Program” (WAP), Florida homeowners can apply for grants to cover duct sealing, weather stripping, water heater wrapping, and other weatherization services. Before applying, you must first complete an energy audit for proof that your home qualifies.
