Why is My Home Air Conditioner Making a Bubbling/Hissing Noise? A Florida Tech Explains
September 16, 2014
It’s both annoying and scary. Your AC is making this strange hissing/bubbling noise and you’re not sure how serious the problem is.
Well, hate to break it to you, but the problem is most likely a refrigerant leak.
We’ll talk about some problems this can cause and what your options are.
Pricy problems caused by a refrigerant leak
Refrigerant is the liquid in your AC that absorbs heat in your air to cool it down. (Some people call refrigerant “coolant”).
So if you have a refrigerant leak, then:
- Your AC won’t keep you cool—something no Florida homeowners want to experience.
- Your utility bills will spike because the AC runs constantly.
- Because the AC runs constantly, another part may break.
Now that you know how serious the problem is, here are your 3 options:
Charge, repair, or replace
1) Add a refrigerant charge, don’t repair the refrigerant leak
f the leak isn’t that bad and your budget is tight, a contractor could just add more refrigerant.
But if the leak is severe, continuing to add refrigerant will quickly cost you a pretty penny (R-22 refrigerant can cost $100 a pound).
So you may want to...
2) Repair the refrigerants leak and add refrigerant
If the leak isn’t severe and your AC still has some years left in it, get a contractor to repair the leak. Your AC repair person will have to:
- Find the leak
- Evacuate the remaining refrigerant
- Repair the leak
- Add new refrigerant
3) Replace the central air conditioner
If the leak is severe, on an expensive part, and the AC is old, you may want to replace the AC unit. Repairing just wouldn’t be worth the cost.
